Long Range Planning
Long range planning enables the Town to develop a vision with opportunities for growth, while recognizing and maintaining the special features of theTown. A comprehensive land use plan insures a compatible mixture of neighborhoods that incorporates various housing types and commercial uses. The Town has several projects underway to update the current Land Use Plan.
- The Davidson-Concord Road Small Area Plan is a joint effort by all 3 North Mecklenburg Towns (Cornelius, Davidson, Huntersville) to develop a land use and transportation plan for the Davidson-Concord Road/Highway 73 area.
- The Downtown Block Plan is a Town initiated a planning process with The Lawrence Group to develop a schematic design that will support redevelopment opportunities within the Town Center.
- The Nantz Road Small Area Plan focuses on lake supported uses and waterfront development in the Nantz Road area.
For economic development purposes, the Town helped develop illustrative sketch plans for two business campus areas – both of which are located along the western side of the I-77 corridor. The projects are referred to as the "Cooke" and "Blakely" properties.
In addition to the above Town projects, Town Planning Staff also participate in projects involving surrounding counties, NCDOT and CATS to name a few.
- MUMPO. The Mecklenburg-Union Metropolitan Planning Organization is a Transportation body that is responsible for overseeing the development of the transportation system in Mecklenburg and Union Counties. MUMPO is currently updating the 2035 Long Range Transportation Plan and has meetings scheduled later this month for public input. Cornelius residents are encouraged to attend and provide feedback.
