About the Historic Preservation Commission

"Preserving Our Heritage for Future Generations"

The Cornelius Historic Preservation Commission, established in 2003, is charged with identifying and pursuing historic designation for structures of historical significance in Cornelius.  Our Town has many historical homes, as well as churches, farms and commercial buildings.  These potential historic landmark designations have been identified in the Historic Survey. The Historic Preservation Guidelines assist property owners in planning alterations to these historic landmarks.

To be considered for local historic designation, the property must:
  1. Be on the Historic Survey
  2. Be at least 50 years old
  3. Be of special significance in terms of it historical, prehistorical, architectural, or cultural importance
  4. Possess integrity of design, setting, workmanship, materials, feeling, and/or association
Are you interested in having your property designated as a local Historic Landmark? If so, complete an Historic Landmark Designation Application or contact the Planning Department for more information.
